PHALSBOURG, the good idea !
Men of honour...
Napoleon called Phalsbourg “the training ground of the braves”
as the town has been the birthplace of an impressive number of officers.
The city was built in 1570 by the Count George Jean de Veldenz and still
has many reminders of its rich military past. The Historical Museum, a former
guardroom, now houses an exceptional collection of uniforms and weapons
from the 1870, 1914-18 and 1939-45 wars.

…and
of letters
Phalsbourg’s literary reputation began in 1847 with the meeting of
the two great writers Erckmann and Chatrian, whose joint works went on to
enjoy worldwide success. The museum has devoted a room to the close friendship
between Emile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian. However, their fame was not
able to outshine that of “Le Tour de la France par deux Enfants”
by G. Bruno, which was used for the civic education of several generations
of schoolchildren.
“Through a thick September fog, two brothers, left the town of Phalsbourg
in Lorraine”
First sentence of the book by G. Bruno, Le Tour de la France par deux enfants.
Entertaining Phalsbourg
Sport events, popular marches and theatre are all an integral part of Phalsbourg’s
city life. In summer, the Theatre Festival brings together companies and
amateurs for a wonderful series of streets events, concerts and open-air
shows.
Gourmet in Phalsbourg
Lying between Lorraine and Alsace, the city of Phalsbourg boasts a traditional
and typical cuisine of Eastern France. Before Christmas, food lovers can
enjoy the gourmet delights of the Regional Foie Gras Fair which brings together
both producers from Lorraine and Alsace.
Along paths
Phalsbourg is situated on the edge of the Northern Vosges Regional Park
where walkers can enjoy an exceptional landscape of thick forests, pink
sandstone rocks and orchards. The Brunnenthal botanical trail, which is
about 4 km long in a valley scattered with springs and old washhouses, introduces
about thirty stopovers to discover the local plants’ life. Starting
from Phalsbourg, walkers, cyclists and mountain-bikers can follow one of
the many signposted routes adapted to all levels.
…and towpath
Not far away from Phalsbourg, on the Marne-Rhine Canal, is the small marina
at Lutzelbourg, a favourite stopover for boating tourists. It is also a
beautiful departure for boat trips or outings along the canal on the towpaths
which are adapted for walkers, horse-riders and cyclists.
